I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Amber is not a mineral. It is time made solid, the fossilised resin of ancient trees, hardened over millions of years into a material that sits somewhere between organic and geological. The oldest specimens date back over 300 million years, and Baltic amber, the most prized variety, formed from the forests of northern Europe between 35 and 50 million years ago. Its colour ranges from pale champagne to deep cognac, the variation determined by the degree of oxidation and the conditions of preservation. It is warm to the touch in a way that stone is not, and it carries within it a record of the world as it was before human memory.

Amber has been worn and traded for longer than almost any other material used in jewellery. Ancient Greeks called it elektron, the origin of the word electricity, because of the static charge it produces when rubbed. It was carried as a protective talisman across cultures from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, burned as incense, ground into medicine, and given as gifts of significance. Its warmth, its rarity, and its age have always made it something more than ornament.

In crystal and energy work, amber is associated with warmth, vitality, and the solar plexus chakra, the energy centre governing confidence, personal power, and the sense of self. It is said to carry a sunny, uplifting energy that draws out negativity and replaces it with clarity and optimism. It is also associated with protection, particularly of the emotional body, and with the kind of deep, steady warmth that comes from feeling grounded and at ease in oneself.

These earrings feature amber stones wire wrapped by hand in gold vermeil; sterling silver with a solid layer of 24K gold, the warm gold tone of the wire a natural complement to the honey tones of the amber. The wire wrap holds each stone securely while allowing its colour and warmth to remain fully visible. The wrapped stones are suspended from gold vermeil earwires, moving gently with the wearer and catching the light as they do.
