Tiger’s eye is one of the most immediately recognisable stones in the mineral world. Its warm bands of gold and amber, shot through with a silky, shifting lustre, are the result of a phenomenon called chatoyancy, from the French for ‘cat’s eye’, caused by light reflecting off parallel fibres of crocidolite within the quartz structure. As the stone moves, the light moves with it, a rippling, almost liquid quality that gives the stone its name and its particular sense of life.
Tiger’s eye is a pseudomorph: it forms when crocidolite, a blue asbestos mineral, is gradually replaced by quartz while retaining the fibrous structure of the original. The result is a stone that carries the memory of one mineral within the body of another, a slow geological transformation that takes millions of years and produces something entirely its own. It is found most notably in South Africa, as well as in Australia, India, and Brazil.
