Welcome to Rachel Hartley Atelier

I am delighted to introduce my new home for handcrafted artisan gemstone jewellery, where every piece is created with intention, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of exceptional gemstones.

I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Abalone shell is not a stone but a living archive, the inner lining of a sea mollusc, built up in microscopic layers of calcium carbonate over years of slow, patient growth. It is this layered structure, known as nacre, that produces its extraordinary iridescence: a shifting play of colour that moves between green, blue, violet, and copper depending on the angle of the light. No two pieces are alike. Each disc carries its own particular arrangement of colour and pattern, formed entirely by the creature that made it.

Freshwater pearls share that same quiet origin. Grown within molluscs in rivers and lakes, each pearl forms around a small irritant, the shell building layer upon layer of nacre until something luminous emerges. The result is a surface that is both soft and radiant, organic, imperfect, and entirely its own.

This piece pairs a hand-selected abalone shell ring with a single freshwater pearl set at its centre, the two materials meeting in a way that feels considered rather than composed. The pearl sits within the shell's natural frame, its soft lustre complementing the iridescent depth of the abalone around it.

Finished on an 18 inch sterling silver fine curb chain, the necklace sits beautifully, a length that works well alone or as part of a layered arrangement.

Abalone has long been used in ceremony and adornment across coastal cultures worldwide, prized for its connection to the sea, to intuition, and to emotional calm. The pearl carries its own symbolism; patience, purity, and the quiet beauty of things that take time.
