Welcome to Rachel Hartley Atelier

I am delighted to introduce my new home for handcrafted artisan gemstone jewellery, where every piece is created with intention, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of exceptional gemstones.

I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

A bar of deep royal blue Lapis Lazuli, held horizontally and suspended by two solid gold vermeil rings.  The setting is polished and architectural, designed to let the stone speak. The pendant hangs from an 18-inch gold vermeil fine curb chain, the links bright and clean against the skin, the whole piece balanced between boldness and refinement.

Lapis lazuli has been prized for over six thousand years, ground into pigment for Renaissance paintings, inlaid into the burial mask of Tutankhamun, worn by Egyptian pharaohs and Mesopotamian queens. Its deep, mineral blue is flecked with gold pyrite and veined with white calcite, making every piece entirely its own. Known as a stone of truth and wisdom, it is associated with the throat and third eye chakras and is thought to encourage clear communication, self-expression, and inner knowing.

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a superior alternative to gold plating. Where standard plating deposits a thin layer of gold over base metal, vermeil uses a substantial layer of 18ct gold, at minimum 2.5 microns thick, over a sterling silver base. The result is a piece that looks, feels, and wears like fine jewellery, with the warmth and depth of colour that only real gold achieves. With appropriate care, keeping it away from water, perfume, and abrasion, gold vermeil retains its finish beautifully over time.
