I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Malachite is one of the most visually arresting stones in the mineral world. Its colour, a deep, saturated green banded with lighter tones in concentric rings and sweeping curves is produced by copper carbonate within the stone, the same chemistry that gives copper its characteristic patina. No two pieces of malachite are alike. The banding is entirely natural, formed over millions of years as the stone grew in layers within copper ore deposits, and each orb carries its own unrepeatable pattern of light and dark.

The spherical form draws out that patterning fully, the smooth, polished surface allowing the eye to travel across the stone’s markings from every angle. It is a form that feels considered and complete, a small, perfect object that holds its own.

Malachite has been used as a stone of protection and transformation across cultures for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians ground it into pigment and wore it as adornment; it was placed in the tombs of pharaohs and carried by travellers as a ward against harm. Today it is associated with the heart chakra, and is said to support emotional healing, encourage honest self-reflection, and help release old patterns that no longer serve. It is a stone of change, not the sudden, disruptive kind, but the slow, deliberate kind that comes from looking clearly at what is and choosing something better. It is also considered a powerful stone of protection, absorbing negative energies from the environment and from the body.

The orb is wire wrapped by hand in gold vermeil, the setting following the natural curve of the stone and holding it securely while allowing its full surface to remain visible. Gold vermeil; sterling silver with a substantial layer of 24K gold brings warmth and longevity to the piece, its rich tone a considered complement to the deep, cool green of the malachite.

Finished on an 18 inch gold vermeil fine curb chain, a classic, lightweight length that sits beautifully at the collarbone, worn alone or layered with other pieces from the collection.
