I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Carnelian is one of the most luminous stones in the mineral world. Its colour, a warm, saturated orange-red ranging from pale amber to deep rust, is produced by iron oxide within the chalcedony, and no two pieces are ever quite the same. High grade carnelian carries an exceptional depth of colour and translucency, the light passing through the stone in a way that makes it appear almost lit from within.

The spherical form draws out that quality fully, the smooth, polished surface allowing the eye to travel across the stone's warm tones from every angle. It is a form that feels considered and complete, a small, perfect object that holds its own.

Carnelian has been prized across cultures for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians called it the stone of the setting sun and used it in amulets and burial jewellery; it was worn by warriors for courage and by orators for confidence. Today it is associated with the sacral chakra, and is said to support creativity, vitality, and motivation. It is a stone of action and warmth, encouraging bold choices and a grounded sense of self. It is also considered a powerful stone of protection, shielding against envy and resentment while drawing in positive energy.

The orb is wire wrapped by hand in gold vermeil, the setting following the natural curve of the stone and holding it securely while allowing its full surface to remain visible. Gold vermeil; sterling silver with a substantial layer of 24K gold brings warmth and longevity to the piece, its rich tone a considered complement to the deep, glowing orange of the carnelian.

Finished on an 18 inch gold vermeil fine curb chain, a classic, lightweight length that sits beautifully at the collarbone, worn alone or layered with other pieces from the collection.
