Welcome to Rachel Hartley Atelier

I am delighted to introduce my new home for handcrafted artisan gemstone jewellery, where every piece is created with intention, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of exceptional gemstones.

I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Black amethyst is a rare and lesser-known member of the quartz family. Unlike its more familiar violet counterpart, black amethyst forms under specific geological conditions that concentrate iron and other mineral inclusions within the crystal structure, producing a stone that ranges from deep charcoal to an almost opaque black, often with a subtle violet or silver undertone visible in certain light. It is found in only a handful of locations worldwide, most notably in Brazil, making each stone a genuinely uncommon piece of the natural world.

Where purple amethyst is widely associated with calm and clarity, black amethyst carries those same qualities with an added depth. It is considered a stone of protection and grounding, said to absorb negative energy and create a sense of energetic stability. It works with the root and crown chakras simultaneously, anchoring the body while keeping the mind clear; a combination that makes it particularly useful for those who need to stay both present and focused. It is a stone with a quiet authority to it.

Raw black amethyst, uncut and unpolished, retains the natural surface of the crystal, its texture, its irregularities, the sense of something pulled directly from the earth. No two raw stones are alike in form or tone. Each one is entirely its own.

This bangle features two raw black amethysts, each shaped into an almost leaf-like silhouette.  The band is open-ended and fully adjustable, shaped to sit comfortably across a range of wrist sizes, and designed to be worn at the wrist or slid higher up the arm depending on the mood and the moment. The brass base is finished with an 18 karat gold plate, free from cadmium and lead, with excellent durability and a fine jewellery finish. The warm gold tone is a considered contrast to the dark, smoky depth of the stone.

The result is a piece that feels both elemental and refined, raw material held in considered metalwork, worn as an everyday talisman or saved for when it matters.
