Welcome to Rachel Hartley Atelier

I am delighted to introduce my new home for handcrafted artisan gemstone jewellery, where every piece is created with intention, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of exceptional gemstones.

I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Agate and amethyst are both varieties of quartz, formed from the same mineral family but expressing themselves in entirely different ways. Agate forms in layers, its banded structure the result of silica-rich fluids depositing slowly within cavities in volcanic rock over millions of years. Polished, it reveals those layers in full: smooth, lustrous, with a translucency that allows light to pass through the stone and illuminate its interior. Amethyst forms as a crystalline growth within the same geological cavities, its violet colour the result of iron and natural irradiation present during crystallisation. Raw, it retains the natural geometry of the crystal: pointed terminations, a rough and honest surface, the unworked record of how it grew. That both minerals can exist within a single specimen, one face polished to a smooth, banded surface, the other edged with raw amethyst crystal is a reminder of how much complexity a single piece of the earth can hold.

Agate is associated with grounding, stability, and a quiet, steady strength. It is said to bring calm to those who wear it, to support clear thinking, and to create a sense of balance between the inner and outer life. Amethyst works primarily with the crown and third eye chakras, supporting intuition, clarity of mind, and a deepened connection to inner wisdom. It is one of the most widely used stones for meditation and spiritual work, said to quiet mental noise and ease anxiety. Together they form a pairing of complementary energies: the grounded calm of agate alongside the intuitive clarity of amethyst, earth and spirit held in the same stone.

The moon is one of the oldest and most universal symbols in human culture. Across traditions it is associated with cycles, with intuition, with the rhythms of the natural world, and with the inner life, the parts of ourselves that are not always visible in daylight. Carved into a stone that is itself half-revealed and half-raw, the moon form carries an additional resonance: something in the process of becoming, neither fully hidden nor fully shown.

This pendant features a moon carved from a specimen that is part agate, part amethyst; the polished face smooth and banded, the raw edge edged with amethyst crystal. The contrast between the two surfaces is the character of the piece: the refined and the elemental held together in a single form. Wire wrapped by hand in sterling silver, the cool, clear tone of the wire a considered complement to both the banded agate and the violet of the amethyst. It is suspended on an 18 inch sterling silver fine curb chain, a lightweight, refined length that sits at the collarbone and allows the pendant to move naturally with the wearer.

A piece that holds two worlds at once.
