Gemstone jewellery is made to be worn and loved, but a little care goes a long way in keeping each piece looking its best. The guidance below applies to all pieces from Rachel Hartley Atelier, whether set with opals, moonstone, amazonite, or any other stone.
General Care
The simplest rule is also the most effective: put your jewellery on last and take it off first. Perfume, hairspray, lotions, and cleaning products can all dull the surface of gemstones and affect sterling silver over time. Getting into the habit of applying these before you put your jewellery on will make a noticeable difference.
Remove your jewellery before swimming, bathing, or exercising. Chlorine, salt water, and sweat can all accelerate tarnishing on sterling silver and, in some cases, affect more porous stones. It is also worth removing pieces before bed, particularly bracelets and necklaces, to reduce the risk of accidental damage.
Caring for Gemstones
Different stones have different levels of hardness and porosity, and this affects how they should be cleaned. As a general rule, avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam cleaning for any of the stones used at Rachel Hartley Atelier. Many gemstones including opal, moonstone, and other softer or more porous stones can be damaged by heat, vibration, or harsh chemicals.
To clean your gemstone jewellery, use a soft, lint-free cloth and, if needed, a small amount of lukewarm water. Avoid soaking pieces for any length of time. Dry thoroughly before storing.
Opals in particular are sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and to drying out. Avoid leaving opal pieces in direct sunlight or in very dry environments for extended periods.
Caring for Sterling Silver
Sterling silver will naturally tarnish over time as it reacts with air and moisture. This is entirely normal and does not indicate poor quality. Regular wearing actually helps to slow tarnishing, as the friction of wear keeps the surface polished.
To remove tarnish, use a soft silver polishing cloth. Avoid abrasive cloths or silver dips, which can be too harsh for pieces that include gemstones. Take care not to polish directly over stones, particularly softer or more porous ones.
Storage
Store each piece separately to prevent scratching. The pouch or box your piece arrives in is ideal for this purpose. Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight, humidity, and extreme temperatures. A cool, dry drawer or jewellery box is best.
If you are storing pieces for a longer period, a small anti-tarnish strip placed in the box or drawer will help to slow the tarnishing process on sterling silver.
A Note on Repairs
If a piece needs attention such as a clasp that has loosened, a stone that has shifted, or any other issue, please get in touch before attempting to repair it yourself. Many pieces can be restored, and it is always worth asking.
