I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Watermelon tourmaline is one of nature's more extraordinary accidents. A single crystal that shifts from blush pink at its core to verdant green at its edges, the colour zoning occurs during formation as the chemical composition of the surrounding fluid changes, producing a stone that looks as though it has been painted from the inside. No two are alike.

Tourmaline belongs to a complex boron silicate mineral group, and it is this chemical complexity that gives it such an exceptional range of colour. The watermelon variety is among the rarest and most sought after, its dual tones the result of trace elements, manganese for the pink, iron for the green, present in shifting concentrations as the crystal grew.

It is a stone long associated with balance and emotional clarity. The pink at its heart is said to carry the energy of compassion and love, while the green speaks to growth, renewal, and connection to the natural world. Together they are thought to harmonise the heart, encouraging both tenderness and resilience in equal measure. Watermelon tourmaline works with the heart chakra, and is often held as a stone for those navigating change or seeking a deeper sense of inner equilibrium.

This pendant features a rectangular faceted watermelon tourmaline measuring 10mm x 5mm (not including bail), the cut chosen to draw out the stone's natural gradient and allow light to move through it with clarity. It is set in sterling silver and suspended on an 18 inch fine silver curb chain, a classic, lightweight length that sits beautifully at the collarbone.
