I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Sunstone is a variety of feldspar that contains tiny platelets of reflective mineral, most commonly hematite or goethite, suspended within the crystal. When light enters the stone, it catches these platelets and scatters back in a phenomenon known as aventurescence: a warm, shifting flash that moves across the surface as the stone moves, like sunlight caught on water. In high grade sunstone, this flash is vivid and immediate, the stone appearing almost to generate its own light from within.

The colour ranges from pale champagne to a rich, peachy copper-orange, the flash ranging from gold to a deep, coppery red depending on the density and orientation of the mineral platelets. No two sunstones are identical. The flash in each stone is its own, determined by the precise arrangement of platelets formed over millions of years, and impossible to replicate.

Sunstone is associated with light, warmth, and personal power. It is said to work with the sacral and solar plexus chakras, encouraging joy, confidence, and a genuine sense of one’s own worth. It is often held as a stone of leadership and independence, one that supports those who give a great deal of themselves, helping to restore energy and encourage healthy boundaries. It carries the energy of the sun: expansive, generous, and sustaining.

This pendant features a high grade sunstone heart, chosen for the quality and intensity of its flash. It is hand wire wrapped in square sterling silver wire with the flat faces of the square wire sitting flush against the stone and creating a structured, architectural detail that is as considered from the back as it is from the front. The wrap is finished with care on both sides, making this a pendant that rewards a second look. It is paired with a 16 inch anti-tarnish sterling silver cable chain choker, finished with a trigger clasp; a fine, close-fitting length that holds the pendant at the throat and allows the flash of the stone to catch the light with every movement.
