Iolite is one of the more quietly remarkable stones in the mineral world. Its colour shifts with the angle of light, a phenomenon known as pleochroism, moving from a deep violet-blue when viewed from one direction to a pale, almost colourless grey from another. This is not a trick of the surface but a property of the crystal structure itself, the result of the way iolite absorbs light differently along different axes. It is a stone that rewards attention.

Iolite is a variety of the mineral cordierite, formed in metamorphic and igneous rock under conditions of intense heat and pressure. Its name comes from the Greek word for violet, and it has been known since antiquity .  Viking navigators are said to have used thin slices of iolite as a polarising filter to locate the sun on overcast days, earning it the name the Viking Compass Stone.

This pendant features four polished iolite spheres, hand wire wrapped in sterling silver, the wire following the natural curves of each stone and binding them together into a considered cluster. The rounded forms catch light from every angle, the shifting violet-blue of the iolite moving as the piece moves.
