I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Black onyx has been worn as a protective stone for thousands of years. Ancient Greeks and Romans carried it into battle. Victorians set it into mourning jewellery as a symbol of strength and endurance. Across cultures and centuries, it has been held as a stone that absorbs and transforms negative energy, a quiet, steadying presence that asks nothing and gives a great deal.

Onyx is a form of chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz, its deep black colour the result of iron and carbon present during formation. The stone is dense and smooth, with a depth to it that seems to draw light in rather than reflect it. Faceted, it reveals a different quality, each cut surface catching and returning light with a precision that gives the stone an unexpected brilliance, dark and luminous at once.

Black onyx is associated with protection, grounding, and inner strength. It is said to work with the root chakra, anchoring scattered energy and encouraging a sense of stability and self-possession. It is often held as a stone for those navigating difficulty or change — not by softening what is hard, but by strengthening the person who faces it. It is also linked to focus and discipline, making it a stone as suited to daily wear as to moments that require steadiness.

This pendant features a faceted black onyx teardrop measuring 40mm x 11mm at its widest point (stone measurement, not including wire), hand wire wrapped in sterling silver. The wire follows the contours of the stone, holding it securely while allowing its full face to remain visible. The elongated teardrop form gives the piece a natural elegance, slender and graceful, with a gentle movement when worn. It is suspended on an 18 inch fine silver curb chain, a classic, lightweight length that sits beautifully at the collarbone.
