Moonstone is a variety of feldspar, its most distinctive quality a phenomenon known as adularescence; the soft, billowing light that appears to move beneath the surface of the stone as it shifts in the hand. This optical effect is caused by the scattering of light between microscopic layers of feldspar within the crystal, and in high grade specimens it produces a blue flash of exceptional clarity and depth: a cool, electric shimmer that seems to come from within the stone rather than from its surface. It is found primarily in Sri Lanka, India, and Madagascar, and the finest blue flash stones are among the most sought-after in the feldspar family.
Moonstone has been revered across cultures for thousands of years. In ancient Rome it was believed to be formed from solidified moonlight; in India it is considered sacred, a stone of good fortune and divine feminine energy. It is associated with the moon in virtually every tradition that has encountered it — with cycles, with intuition, with the tides of emotion and the rhythms of the natural world. It is said to enhance inner knowing, to support those navigating change or transition, and to bring a quality of calm, reflective awareness to those who wear it. A stone for those who trust their instincts, or are learning to.
Raw, unworked stone carries something that a polished or faceted piece cannot: the honest record of how the crystal actually formed. The natural form of a raw moonstone, its ridges, its irregular silhouette, its uneven surface, is not a flaw but a feature, evidence of the conditions under which it grew. Each stone is unique in shape and tone, and the blue flash shifts with every movement, never appearing quite the same twice. No two pieces are alike. Each one is entirely its own.
This pendant features a high grade raw moonstone with a blue flash of exceptional quality, wire wrapped by hand in sterling silver, the cool, clear tone of the wire a natural complement to the pale shimmer of the stone. The wire wrap holds the stone securely while preserving its natural form, the handmade quality of the wrapping giving each piece a character that cannot be replicated by machine. It is suspended on an 18 inch sterling silver fine curb chain, a lightweight, refined length that sits at the collarbone and allows the pendant to move naturally with the wearer.
A piece that carries its own light.
