Welcome to Rachel Hartley Atelier

I am delighted to introduce my new home for handcrafted artisan gemstone jewellery, where every piece is created with intention, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of exceptional gemstones.

I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Ruby is a variety of corundum, its colour the result of chromium present during crystallisation; a red that ranges from pale rose to the deep, vivid crimson of the finest Burmese stones, known in the trade as pigeon's blood. It is one of the hardest gemstones in existence, second only to diamond, and has been among the most prized stones in the world for thousands of years. Found primarily in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Mozambique, and Thailand, ruby has been associated with royalty, power, and passion across virtually every culture that has encountered it. Faceted into micro beads, it retains all of its colour and brilliance in miniature, each tiny stone a point of deep red light.

Ruby is associated with the root chakra and the heart chakra, a combination that makes it one of the most energetically potent of the red stones. It is said to bring vitality, courage, and a passionate engagement with life, to energise and motivate, to support those who need to act with confidence and conviction. It has long been associated with love and devotion, with the kind of feeling that is not passive but active, not quiet but present. A stone of fire and intention.

These earrings feature 20mm gold vermeil hoops with tiny faceted micro ruby beads wrapped by hand along the length of the hoop in gold vermeil wire; sterling silver with a layer of solid 24K gold. The effect is one of continuous, glittering colour: the deep red of the ruby running half of the circumference of the hoop, the gold wire holding each bead in place with a precision that can only be achieved by hand. The warm gold tone of the wire and hoop draws out the warmth in the ruby, the two complementing each other in a pairing that is both striking and refined. These are earrings that catch the light with every movement.

The hoop is one of the oldest and most enduring forms in jewellery, worn across cultures and centuries, from ancient Egypt to the present day. Unbroken and continuous, it carries a quiet symbolism of wholeness and return, a resonance that feels particularly apt for a stone as ancient and as enduring as ruby. It is also simply one of the most flattering shapes an earring can take, framing the face without demanding attention and working as well with a simple white shirt as it does with an evening dress. Some forms never go out of style because they were never really in it.
