Gold Vermeil Argentinian Rhodochrosite necklace
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral, its colour ranging from pale blush to a deep, saturated rose depending on the concentration of manganese present during formation. It forms in hydrothermal veins and sedimentary deposits, and while it is found in several locations around the world, the finest specimens come from a single source: the Capillitas mine in the Catamarca province of Argentina. Here, over millions of years, stalactitic formations built up in concentric layers, producing the stone's most distinctive quality: its banding. Alternating rings of deep rose and creamy white, each one a record of the conditions at the time of its growth, as individual as a fingerprint and impossible to replicate.
Rhodochrosite is considered one of the rarer gemstone materials in jewellery-quality form. The banded variety in particular is found in limited quantities, and pieces that display strong, well-defined patterning are increasingly difficult to source. It is a stone that carries its provenance visibly, the geology of a specific place and time made wearable.
It is a stone long associated with the heart chakra, and with the deeper work of emotional healing. Not the soft, uncomplicated warmth of rose quartz, but something more considered, rhodochrosite is said to work with the parts of the heart that have been closed off, encouraging compassion for oneself as much as for others. It is associated with self-worth, with the courage to feel fully, and with the kind of gentle but persistent healing that happens slowly, over time. A stone for those who are ready to come back to themselves.
This pendant features an oblong rhodochrosite cabochon with raised, bevelled edges, a setting detail that frames the stone's banding and gives the piece a sculptural, considered quality. The profile is gently domed, allowing the stone's surface to catch the light and draw the eye across its pattern. It is fitted with a 24k gold bail, chosen for its warmth and its compatibility with the stone's rose tones, and suspended on an 18 inch gold vermeil (sterling silver with a layer of solid gold) fine curb chain, a lightweight, refined length that sits at the collarbone and allows the pendant to move naturally with the wearer.
A piece that rewards looking at closely, and wearing often.
