I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Freshwater pearls are formed within freshwater mussels, each one the result of years of slow, layered growth around an irritant within the shell. Unlike their saltwater counterparts, freshwater pearls are cultivated primarily in China and are available in a range of natural tones; white, cream, blush, and soft grey, each with its own subtle lustre. No two pearls are identical. Their surface has a warmth and depth that is entirely different from glass or resin: a soft, organic glow that has been prized for its association with purity, elegance, and quiet luxury for thousands of years. Pearl is one of the few organic gemstones not mined from the earth but grown within a living creature, and that origin gives it a quality that is entirely its own.

In crystal and energy work, pearl is associated with the moon, with the water element, and with the divine feminine. It is said to bring calm, emotional clarity, and a sense of inner wisdom, supporting those who wear it to move through the world with grace and composure. It has been associated with purity and integrity across cultures from ancient China to classical Rome, and has been worn by royalty and brides for millennia. A gem with an unbroken history of quiet prestige.

These earrings are designed around the natural beauty of the pearl, allowing it to remain the focal point while the gold vermeil detail adds warmth and structure. A drop of freshwater pearls is accented with gold vermeil beads.  The whole piece hangs from gold vermeil earwires; sterling silver with a layer of solid 24K gold, the warm gold tone running through every element and giving the earrings a coherence that feels both refined and effortless. They move gently with the wearer, catching the light as they do, and sit equally well with a simple white shirt or an evening dress.

Classic in the best sense, not trend-dependent, not trying too hard.
