Welcome to Rachel Hartley Atelier

I am delighted to introduce my new home for handcrafted artisan gemstone jewellery, where every piece is created with intention, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the natural beauty of exceptional gemstones.

I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

There is a particular kind of craftsmanship that reveals itself only up close. Each drop of these earrings is constructed by hand with three micro emerald beads individually connected by wire wrapping, the joins neat and deliberate, the movement fluid. From that drop hangs an emerald star-shaped bead, its geometric form a quiet counterpoint to the organic irregularity of the stone itself. Each drop measures approximately 45mm, a length that sits beautifully below the ear, present without being overwhelming, and designed to move with the wearer. The whole piece is suspended from a gold vermeil stud post, sitting close to the ear before falling away in a drop that catches the light with every turn of the head.

Emerald is one of the great gemstones, prized across civilisations for millennia and still among the most coveted stones in fine jewellery. Its colour, a deep, saturated green with a warmth that distinguishes it from other green stones, comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium within the beryl crystal structure. Natural emeralds almost always carry inclusions known in the trade as the stone's 'jardin', from the French for garden and these internal characteristics are not flaws but fingerprints, evidence of the stone's natural formation and part of what makes each one singular.

Emerald has long been associated with growth, renewal, and the abundance of the natural world. In ancient Egypt, it was a symbol of fertility and eternal youth; in the classical world, it was sacred to Venus, goddess of love and beauty. It is regarded as a stone of the heart, not in the romantic sense alone, but in the deeper sense of living with clarity, purpose, and an open awareness of the world around you. It is also considered a stone of wisdom and patience, encouraging a long view and a steady hand.

The posts and wire wrapping are crafted in gold vermeil; sterling silver plated with 24-karat gold, chosen for the warmth of its finish and its quality as a base for stones of this depth of colour. Gold and emerald are one of the oldest pairings in jewellery history, and for good reason: the richness of each brings out the best in the other.
