I’m Rachel Hartley, founder and jewellery designer of Rachel Hartley Atelier. With years of experience studying and working with the healing properties and energy of crystals, my knowledge of gemstone selection extends beyond aesthetics. Each stone is chosen not only for its beauty and individuality, but also for the qualities it is believed to embody.

Every design begins with the gemstone. I work with carefully selected stones, combining them with sterling silver, gold vermeil, and copper to create jewellery that is both timeless and deeply personal.

Each piece is handcrafted in my studio with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every creation reflects the care, skill, and intention invested in its making. This is not mass-produced jewellery. It is created slowly, one piece at a time, for those who value authenticity, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.

Black Onyx and Black Spinel share a depth of colour that is immediate and arresting, a darkness that absorbs light rather than reflecting it, giving both stones a quiet, commanding presence. Together they create a piece that is bold in its palette and precise in its making.

Onyx is a form of chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz, its deep black the result of iron and carbon inclusions laid down in fine, parallel bands. It has long been associated with strength, protection, and grounding, a stone that steadies the mind and anchors the wearer. Black Spinel, by contrast, is a magnesium aluminium oxide prized for its exceptional hardness and brilliance. It carries a similar protective energy, but with an added quality of clarity and focus, thought to clear confusion and support decisive thinking. Both stones work with the root chakra, encouraging a sense of stability and presence.

These hoops are crafted in sterling silver, each one centred on a smooth Black Onyx teardrop stone suspended at the heart of the hoop. Curving away from it on either side, small faceted Black Spinel stones are wrapped in sterling silver wire along the arc of the hoop, their cut surfaces catching the light as the earring moves. The hoop measures 30mm, a presence on the ear without being overstated. The result is a piece with a clear structure and a considered rhythm, the stillness of the Onyx drop anchored by the quiet glint of the Spinel on either side.

Considered enough for an occasion, understated enough for every day.
